Rubber Watch Bands: The Story
A popular choice for dive watches, scuba diving transitioned from a niche sport into a generally consented public sporting activity in the 1960s, and the introduction of waterproof scuba equipment made rubber straps a natural replacement option for the standard plastic ones offered by noted swiss maisons back then. In the present day, there are a lot of options when it comes to rubber straps, with different styles and colours to suit any taste.
One of the first rubber straps was developed by Hublot founder Carlo Crocco who wanted something that was waterproof, sleek and comfortable to wear. The result was a vulcanized rubber that had an attractive vanilla smell, and which matched the quality of straps used on scuba diving equipment of the time. That’s how the Tropic strap was born, and it remains a popular alternative to the plastic straps of old today. Rubber can also be shaped and coloured to fit the style of a watch, or to make it feel more comfortable against the skin.
