Hosting a clothing swap is such a great way to get rid of old unwanted clothes and swap them for another piece. The basic idea is that everyone brings unwanted clothes to take home what they do want and the rest of whatever is left over gets donated to a local thrift store. It's a perfect example for recycling to keep clothes out of landfills while shopping for free. Here are a few tips to help make your next clothes swap successful!
SELECT A HOST
This person will be in charge of collecting items in advance, selecting a location for the gathering, and is the main contact for guests.
The more friends, the more selections. Invite friends and let them know to invite others. Spread the word through social media Facebook events or a simple text chain invite.
Plan your clothing swap at least 2-3 weeks in advance. The best times are around the end of the season like "spring cleaning" for transition after winter days. People usually need time to go through their wardrobe to decide what to give up or keep.
1. Shoppers are allowed to take home however many items they bring. Ex. 3 items donated and 3 items selected to bring home.
2. Shoppers can bring as much as they want and take as much home.
3. Admission fee for each shopper.
4. Free admission to shoppers who bring items. Otherwise, guests who don't bring items pay a fee.
DAY OF SWAP
Try to organize with categories by size, color, or apparel type. Set up tables for any apparel that can be folded or laid out such as tees or jeans. Keep hangers or racks for dresses, skirts, jackets and coats.
Swap on! The best feeling is getting rid of unwanted items from your closet while allowing others to find it as treasure. Best of luck to your future clothing swaps and stay tuned for announcements for our Spring 2017 events.
