Environmental Sustainability in Sports Operations

From air pollution to habitat loss, the operation of sports facilities and events has a number of negative impacts on nature. Thankfully, many sports organizations are addressing these impacts through the use of eco-friendly strategies. One of these efforts is being led by Jonathan Casper, an associate professor in NC State’s department of parks, recreation and tourism management. He and his team are focusing on ways to help athletes and fans understand the importance of nature, and how they can act for it through their daily actions.

These initiatives aren’t always easy. For example, the success of most waste reduction strategies requires a change in fan and stadium employee behaviors. Similarly, water conservation is only possible if staff report leaks quickly.

To address these issues, Casper and his team are working to develop an environmental awareness scale for sports services. This scale is intended to inform the design and implementation of green strategies by assessing their potential to influence consumer behavior. This research is important because current knowledge about how green practices influence consumers is limited (Cairney, 2012). This scale will fill a gap in literature and provide a valuable tool for sport service managers.
